Science, religion can co-exist
REV. DR. RICHARD HOWELL  26th Sep 2015

Solomon's famous wisdom was not only limited to moral discernment. Solomon is described as a philosopher, a poet, a musician, and a natural scientist. "He spoke of trees and beasts, and of birds, and of reptiles, and of fish. He also spoke 3,000 proverbs, and his songs were 1,005." (cf. 1 Kings 4:29-34) In other words, according to the Bible, nearly every type of knowledge, from the arts to biological science, from music to psychology, was poured out upon Solomon by the Creator of them all. God is always portrayed as the source of all true knowledge, and intellectual ability is His gift.

Paul was an intellectual giant who was educated at the feet of Gamaliel (Acts 22:3). Paul's sophisticated education was recognized by the governor Festus, who could not undermine his logic about the incarnation of God in Jesus Christ; therefore sarcastically responded "your great learning is driving you out of your mind" (Acts 26:24).

We all must resonate with the culture of plurality and tolerance. We must respond sympathetically to the claims of the scientific community; which is an invitation to listen with openness to what the natural sciences are saying. That same invitation is open to scientists; to look beyond the observatory and the laboratory, because both science and religion ultimately flow out of the same love for truth that lies at the heart of our existence. We must never allow them simply to go their separate ways.

While qualities of argument, careful experimentation, clear thinking, physical insight and logic are important, we must also honour and value qualities such as beauty, compassion, connectedness, empathy, insight, inspiration, the spiritual, wisdom and wonder.

The coming of the Lord Jesus into this world is portrayed as heaven and earth connected by a ladder. The spiritual and the physical are connected. Creation is God's great outdoors inviting us to listen with openness.
