Surfing Locations & Festivals in India
  6th Sep 2014

here are a number of great surfing locations dotted along India's 7,000-km coastline, some famous tourist beaches, some secret coves with names like "Cliffs" and "Big Rock". Here are a few of the most popular surfing beaches in India, and the festivals they play host to.

Kovalam (Kerala)

One of the favourite spots for surfing in India, Kovalam has high waves throughout the year and offers cheap stay and travel.

Villupuram (Tamil Nadu)

The Kallialay Surf School in Villupuram, near Puducherry, provides great packages, which include surf lessons, board rental and stay at a very reasonable price. They also organise the annual Summer Swell Challenge every August for surfers from all over the world. More details at www.surfschoolindia.com

Covelong (Tamil Nadu)

A fishing village a few kilometres from Chennai, Covelong is a popular destination for surfers, and will host the second Covelong Point Surf Classic and Music Festival this year from 12 to 14 September. More details at www.covelongpoint.com

Puri (Orissa)

Every February, the temple town hosts the India Surf Festival, featuring music, art and adventure. There's little surfing during the rest of the year, though, since the pilgrims aren't particularly inclined towards riding the six-foot waves. Goa

Goa isn't the ideal surf destination for most parts of the year, but makes up for it with kite surfing and stand-up paddle. In May and June, however, as the rainy season begins, veteran surfers can catch waves up to 10 feet tall and surf all day long.

Vizag (Andhra)

Free of crowds and dotted with good, cheap hotels, Vizag has many beaches that boast waves high enough to surf throughout the year.
