.T. Ram Mohan chronicles the evolution of one of India's finest educational institutions -Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, in this book. It highlights the efforts of Vikram Sarabhai, the first honorary director of the institution, and the young Oxford graduate Ravi Mathai, who was appointed as the first director of the institution by Sarabhai despite stiff opposition from fellow academicians. Mohan describes how the 38-year-old transformed the institution through his vision and hard work. The book also mentions some anecdotes on Mathai which weren't known earlier. For instance, he was sent to Oxford by his father to escape punishment for drunken and reckless driving, after he ran over a man. The author discusses the relevance of the Matthai model and argues whether IIMs should be given greater autonomy. "IIMs have enough autonomy," he writes. "The government is an important stakeholder and has a critical role to play in maintaining accountability of the institute." This is an ideal read for management aspirants.
