ver considered letting strangers contribute to your literary work and create something absolutely fresh? The Neverending Story Project (NeS) gives writers from all across the world a platform to share their work, discuss it and allows you to write a part of a story or add to someone's story. It has formed a chain of writers who perhaps otherwise would not have been published to potentially work on something together.
Canada-based avid blogger Stephanie Cooke started the NeS, drawing inspiration from Doodleswap, which allows participants to email a doodle made by them to be passed on to another participant. Her idea was to involve the readers in an interactive writing project.
"The idea is to bring writers and artists together to collaborate on something unique. I had this dream of seeing writers from all over the world working on a story with us. I love getting letters, emailing and it's just great when you expect something like a bill in the mail and instead, find a letter from a friend or in our case, a story," says Cooke.
NeS is a three-page story project where participants either email the first part of a story or receive a second or third part of a story for them to flesh out. Anyone can be a part of the project. You need to fill a form to be a part of it.
"A few of the contributors, including me, write the first few pages since sometimes, people like to receive the second page of a story to begin with. But, if we receive a first page from someone, which is properly edited and has potential, we use it in the project. As for what stories go to whom, it's completely random," Cooke told Guardian20.
Though the writers are encouraged to share their stories online, they are copyrighted under a creative commons license. "The copyright goes to the website. We didn't want the stories popping up all over the Internet with one author taking credit for the whole story. Writers are encouraged to share their stories, but we ask them to acknowledge the presence of the other writers," she says.
Cooke, who wishes to publish a book of the best stories received by the project, concludes saying, "Writing gives you an opportunity to be a character and create a life out for these. From complete fiction to semi-autobiographical, writing is the perfect medium for self expression."
