The first look of Jaanisaar.

Muzaffar Ali has directed a film called Jaanisaar, after almost three decades of absence. The trailer and the first look of the film was launched at the Asia Fashion Week last month, and has premiered in Wedding Asia in Delhi. Jaanisaar is a period drama based in 1857, after the First War of Independence. It is the story of a westernised boy who falls in love with a traditional young girl, and their tumultuous love story plays out against the conflicting events of that period. Awadh is the stage of this period drama yet again; Muzaffar Ali's cult classic Umrao Jaan had also been shot and based in this historic city, as well as his television series Jaan-I-Alam.

The film marks the debut of designer Pernia Qureshi, who plays the part of Noor in Jaanisaar. Apart from Qureshi, Jaanisaar has Imran Abbas Naqvi, Dalip Tahil, Abid Yunus Khan and Luv Bhargava in main roles.

Ali will play the role of a revolutionary character himself in the film, someone who participated in the Revolt and incites passion among his peers.

The music of the film has been composed by Ali and Shaqfat Ali Khan. There are poems by Rahi Masoom Raza, Daagh Dehlvi and Wajid Ali Shah that have been rendered in the songs.
