Om Darbadar
  22nd Jan 2012

Influenced by Surrealism and Dadaism, Om Darbadar (1988) is a post-modernist film that dodges linear narrative. It is a multi-layered satire on mythology, arts, politics and philosophy. Based on imaginary happenings in Ajmer and Pushkar in an absurdist plot, the film examines humorous conflicts between science and religion. Om Darbadar is the story of Om (Aditya Lakhia) and his passage into adolescence. Om's strange family includes his father, Babuji (Lakshminarayan Shastri), who quits his government job to dedicate himself to astrology; and his older sister Gayatri (Gopi Desai), who is dating an idler, Jagdish (Lalit Tiwari). Through Om's self discovery, the viewer is taken into the realm of science, magic, and religion through bizarre symbolism.
