Tilda Swinton: The Androgynous Angel

1. Katherine Mathilda 'Tilda' Swinton was born in London on 5 November, 1960, to an ancient Anglo-Scots family. She was schooled in London before graduating from the Murray Edwards College.

2. Swinton worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company, before embarking on a career in film in the mid-'80s. In 1986, she appeared in the mini-series Zastrozzi: A Romance and partnered with director Derek Jarman on Carravagio. Soon after, films such as War Requiem (1989), The Last of England (1988), Your Cheatin' Heart (1990) and Orlando (1992) followed. She won the Volpi Cup Best Actress award for her role in Edward II (1991).

3. Recent years have seen Swinton move towards mainstream projects, including The Deep End (2001), for which she won a Golden Globe nomination. She then appeared in The Beach (2000), Vanilla Sky (2001), The Adaptation (2002), The Statement (2003) and Young Adam (2003) for which she won a BAFTA Scotland for Best Actress.

4. In 2005, she appeared as the White Witch Jadis in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and had cameos in sequels, Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Swinton then played an androgynous angel Gabriel in the fantasy-drama, Constantine.

5. Swinton's performance in Michael Clayton (2007) earned her a BAFTA award for Best Supporting Actress and an Oscar for Best Performance in a Supporting Role. In 2008, she appeared in three notable productions: Burn After Reading (Coen Brothers), The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Julia (several critics claimed she should have won an Academy Award for this role).

6. In 2011, Swinton starred in We Need to Talk about Kevin, for which she won numerous awards and nominations (including Golden Globe and BAFTA). She most recently appeared in Wes Anderson's, Moonrise Kingdom.

7. She served as jury member in several film festivals, including Berlin International Film Festival (1988) and Cannes (2004).
