Vera Ann Farmiga: A Screen Delight

1. Vera Ann Farmiga was born on August 6, 1973 in Clifton, New Jersey to Ukrainian immigrants Mykhailo and Luba Farmiga. She attended a Ukrainian Catholic school in Newark and toured with a Ukrainian folk-dancing ensemble.

2. Although she intended to become an ophthalmologist, Farmiga attended Syracuse University's School of Visual and Performing Arts. She made her Broadway debut in 1996 as an understudy in the play Taking Sides.

3. Following this, she played a role in the television series Roar, alongside Heath Ledger. Throughout the late 1990s, she continued appearing in stage, television and film roles, including a supporting role in Return to Paradise (1998).

4. From 2000, she starred in bigger roles in Autumn in New York, 15 Minutes and Snow White (both 2001), Love in the Time of Money (2002) and Dummy (2003). The year 2004 was really good for her as she appeared in Touching Evil, Iron Jawed Angels, Mind the Gap, The Manchurian Candidate and Down to the Bone, for which she won several awards including the LA Film Critics Award for Best Actress.

5. Rather than attending auditions for films, she makes short films which she submits for casting. One such audition films led to Martin Scorsese inviting her for a read with Leonardo DiCaprio, which led to her role as a police psychiatrist in The Departed (2006).

6. In 2007, Farmiga landed the lead role in Never Forever and also starred alongside Sam Rockwell in the psychological horror Joshua. In 2008, she appeared in Quid Pro Quo, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Nothing But the Truth, Orphan and opposite George Clooney in the 2009 comedy-drama Up in the Air (2009) for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

7. On June 25, 2010, she was inducted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Farmiga then appeared in Henry's Crime with Keanu Reeves (2010) and Source Code (2011). She made her directorial debut with Higher Ground (2011), in which she also starred.
