he Delhi police has arrested five men for cheating hundreds of people in different parts of the country on the pretext of installing mobile towers on their property.

They would convince their victims that mobile towers belonging to Virgin, Aircel and Idea would be set up on their property for which they have to pay a tax and a registration fee.

The money thus received would then go into the over 100 accounts that they had opened in reputed banks like ICICI, Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India and State Bank of Patiala, among others, by using fake identifications.

The five men, Islam Ahmad, Deepak Kumar Malhotra, Suraj, Mukesh Kumar and Tilakraj would issue advertisements in leading newspapers to attract potential victims.

According to O.P. Mishra, Deputy Commissioner of Police, East District, the people who would call them after reading the advertisements would be sent fake contracts.

They would be promised that the telecom companies would pay them a monthly rent of Rs 65,000 to 70,000, plus an advance of Rs 40 lakh. The men would then demand a registration fee from the victim.

"The registration fee was Rs 5,000. They used to give the victim different documents and go with him to do a verification of the site. They would ask the victim to deposit a tax of Rs 43,000 in one of their accounts. As soon as the money would be deposited, they would withdraw it," said Mishra.

In order to open their bank accounts, the men had forged IDs and documents and cheated quite a few people in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. The gang was active for the past six months.

On 4 April, the police received information about the racket being run from an office in Acharya Niketan area in Mayur Vihar and they were arrested. The police has recovered 180 mobile phones, nearly 2,000 fake stamp papers, fake agreements of mobile companies, fake appointment letters and fake seals of Government of India and of mobile companies, apart from various electronic gadgets.
