.V.S. Laxman is all set to pad up and begin his second innings with Anil Kumble. The Hyderabadi middle order batsman is an "icon" in Tenvic, a Bangalore based sports consulting firm, started by former India captain Anil Kumble.
Speaking to The Sunday Guardian, Vasant Bharadwaj, who is a co-author of the company along with Anil Kumble and his brother Dinesh, said that Laxman is an "icon player". "He (Laxman) is an icon player for us. Prakash Padukone (badminton), Sharath Kamal (table tennis) are our other icon players."
When asked whether the "icon players" would be conducting coaching camps and related on-field activities, Bharadwaj said that right now they would be doing background work. "We don't believe in making our icons do celebrity appearances. The main idea is to generate value from the experiences of these sportspersons. For instance, Laxman would personally supervise the creation of video based coaching manuals and evaluate coaches' competencies for career growth as prescribed in the Tenvic Coaches Certification Programme."
Bharadwaj, himself an international level table tennis player, said that though Tenvic came into existence as a brand in 2011, the company was in existence earlier as the Anil Kumble Sports Promotion Limited. "Tenvic was ideated during 1999-2000, when we saw the need for such an offering where the power of cricket was leveraged to enable several activities. The reason why Anil, Dinesh and myself came together for this initiative was because we believe sports can make the difference. Having come from strong sporting backgrounds, we understand the need of the sporting ecosystem," he added.
When asked whether Tenvic had decided a timeline for these icons to be present during the coaching camps, Bharadwaj said, "Right now we have not decided when these icons will actively participate in the coaching camps. It all remains to be seen."
Tenvic is the short form of "to ensure victory". Currently, Tenvic is concentrating on spreading sports both at the grassroots and at the corporate level. "At the grassroots, we are targeting children through sports development programmes. We would also make our pricing strategy inclusive so as to reach across to a large cross section of society. Currently, we are associated with eight schools, including Pearson and Heritage Schools," Bharadwaj added.
On the corporate front, Tenvic offers insights from sports for leadership development. "We intend to reach as many corporates as possible. We hope to inculcate a sporting culture among the corporate," Bharadwaj said. Pepsi, Accenture and PNB Paribas are some corporates who have tied up with Tenvic.
