Sex workers a common sight in West Delhi

The prostitutes openly solicit for customers, often within plain view of the police.

oliciting by sex workers in the residential neighbourhood of West Delhi and South West Delhi is getting common by the day as police chooses to remain a mute spectator.

This correspondent himself witnessed a scantily dressed prostitute openly soliciting for customers at the busy road that connects Janakpuri Super Specialty Hospital with Dabri crossing on Wednesday night.

Without any fear of the police, the woman in question was signalling to passing cars that had male occupants and later, after a two-minute haggling, got into a car and drove away. A police picket, which was being manned by two constables barely 300 meters away, made no attempts to stop either the woman or the occupant of the car.

The negligence of the police can be further gauged from the fact that the Janakpuri police station is less than 1 km away from the spot where the particular prostitute was soliciting customers.

On Thursday night again two women were soliciting customers near Dwarka Sector 13 metro station adjacent to the Radisson Blue Hotel at 11.15 pm. The two women, who were not trying to conceal their attempts to attract the attention of possible customers, were standing without fear on the well-lit main road that houses many posh residential societies.

According to a betel and cigarette vendor, who sits near the Netaji Subhash society, Sector 13, these women have been operating there for the past two-three months. "These women openly solicit customers despite the presence of a police picket. The policemen who are patrolling the area ignore them. A few days back, a brawl had erupted between two groups of youth over who would take the girls. When you see such things happening openly, that too in a residential area, you lose confidence in the police," he said.

Forty-two year-old Sanjeev Kumar, an MNC employee who lives at Sector 11 in Dwarka, said he had seen prostitutes soliciting for customers several times in the area. "I return from office generally at 11.30 pm and in the last one month I have come across three instances of prostitutes soliciting for customers at busy intersection like Sector 6 and near Ashirwaad Chowk. Many of them sit in autos and once the deal is fixed, they go with their customers. Earlier, my wife and I used to go out for a stroll even at midnight but after witnessing these incidents, we have stopped venturing out now," he said, adding that the fear of police in the society is going down.

"How else would a prostitute gather the courage to solicit customers at 11.30 pm on a busy road?" he asked.

Messages sent to DCP South-West seeking his comments had drawn no response at the time this story went to press.
