hief gymnastic coach Vladimir Chertkov, has packed his bags and left the country in a huff. The noted coach who helped Ashish Kumar create history by winning medals in last year's Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, left the Capital early on Saturday morning
Speaking to Sunday Guardian, hours before boarding his flight to Chicago,US, Chertkov said he was going on a long leave. "I am going on a long leave. Beyond this, I am not willing to comment right now," he said.
Chertkov, known for his love-hate relationship with the Gymnastics Federation of India and Sports Authority of India officials, was peeved at the fact that the government had not cleared his Long Term Sevelopment plans (LTDP)
Another reason which is seen as a major factor behind the Chertkov's departure is the fact that Ashish Kumar's chances to qualify for the London Games is virtually over. "With Ashish not having any chance to make the grade for the London Olympics, he was very unhappy. He was very disappointed after Ashish failed to qualify," said an GFI official.
It must be mentioned here that Ashish finished 108 out of 270 competitors at the Tokyo World Championship in September.(The event was an Olympic qualifier) In the all-round event Ashish scored 79.30 points. He missed the mark by a mere two points—which would have resulted him in making it to the test event to held in London in January.
Chertkov was also unhappy with the delay in beginning the preparations for Olympics after the Asian Games. "He felt that following the Asian Games there was a long gap as the gymnasts started their preparations only in May.This was another reason why he was unhappy with the GFI,"said the official. It is sad to see such an distinguished coach and the one who almost singlehandedly put India on the world map leave in such a manner.
