Colombian blends or Jamaican Blue: Coffee for your daily grind

A coffee bean plant in a coffee estate at Chikkamagalauru

he way I see is that there are two kinds of people on this planet- the tea drinkers and the coffee drinkers (I, belong to the latter). Some of us like a long black, a flat white, a mocha or newer versions such as an iced frappuccino with caramel and vanilla. As legend goes, coffee was first introduced in India by a Muslim saint who went by the name of Baba Budan, who while on a pilgrimage to Mecca, smuggled seven coffee beans and planted them in Chikkamagaluru district in 1670. Indian coffee since then has expanded to other states, and there are about 250,000 producers of coffee in the country.

We are predominantly a nation of tea drinkers and yet beverage giants like Dunkin Donuts, Costa Coffee, Starbucks and Café Coffee Day seem to be more commonplace than ever now. People swap lunch outings for coffee dates often now and I get pretty happy when I meet discerning customers who can tell the difference between a flat white and a cappuccino. India is the world's sixth largest coffee exporter today- and may turn net importer within the next decade, says Tata Coffee Managing Director Hameed Huq.

Naturally, procuring coffee and buying exotic coffee online (think: Jamaican Blue Mountain, Balinese Kopi Luwak, Colombian blends) has become a lot easier. You no longer have to rely on relatives and friends overseas sending you premium grade beans because you can now order it online.

The Indian Bean is Kunal Ross's brainchild, and it aims to deliver single origin coffee from Chikkamagluru, Coorg and Kodaikanal to your doorstep. We love their watapi blend from the B.R hills in Karnataka. They also deliver nationwide and have free delivery. What are you waiting for?

Blue Tokai, is another brand that was born out of a love for this caffeinated beverage by Matt Chitharanjan and Namrata Asthana in Gurgaon. You can buy customised blends as well as moka pots, French press machines and grinders. They've got prompt deliveries and make great presents too.

The Coffee Coach

Sahil Jatana launched The Coffee Coach in 2011 to spread awareness about coffee and different brewing techniques in India. He retails online and sells coffee making equipment as well as beans. He saw potential in the industry after 50-60 successful coffee appreciation talks but still feels that the online market has a long way to go.

Kaffa Cerado

New York University graduate Kritvas Dalmia has a different plan. He launched Kaffa Cerrado - a brand with premium grade international single origin beans exclusively for coffee connoisseurs and gourmands. We love the Colombian and Dominican blends and its definitely more expensive but well worth the price.
To order, call on +91-98730 29911, or visit their Facebook page - www.facebook.com/KaffaCerrado. Alternatively, email them at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

La Grinde

Another Delhi based initiative called 'La Grinde' was set up by Anil Bathla who decided to start his coffee venture when he found that coffee drinkers wanted to replicate a good cappuccino at home but beans were expensive and never fresh. With a loyal customer base and an online shop that sells beans and paraphernalia, La Grinde plans to introduce more variants of coffee soon. In the meanwhile, we recommend you order a bag each of the French espresso roast and monsoon Malabar blend.
