‘Constable heart attack was caused by anxiety’

Sources say that the injuries mentioned in the report could be multi-factorial and details seem made up and added under police pressure.

elhi police constable Subhash Tomar, who died on duty at the venue of the violent protests that erupted on Raisina Hill last weekend, suffered a heart attack due to anxiety.

Sources in Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital told this newspaper: "The cause of death was myocardial infarction (heart attack) due to anxiety."

The police has been citing from the post-mortem report, which stated that the cause of death was "myocardial infarction and its complications that could be precipitated by multiple ante-mortem injuries to neck and chest produced by blunt force impact."

The report adds that the third, fourth and fifth ribs of the deceased were fractured.

However, sources said that ribs are likely to have been fractured due the cardiac pulmonary resuscitation, which was given to the constable for treatment. "During CPR, the ribs break down when the chest is pressed," a source said.

The report adds that the constable suffered mid-calibaculur bleeding. In plain terms, it means he received injuries near the collar-bone area. Effusion of blood in neck muscles and tissues was also cited in the report.

A source said, "The report is couched in very vague language and none of this can be stated for sure. The injuries could be multi-factorial. These details seem made up and added later under police pressure."

The post-mortem was conducted at the Lady Hardinge Medical Hospital by a medical board constituted for the purpose.

Sources also maintained that the deceased constable suffered no major "external injuries" or "severe internal injuries" that could have caused the death.

The police issued a notice and summoned the Medical Superintendent of the hospital, T.S. Sidhu, for stating the same as it contradicts what the post-mortem report has said.

The police version of the death has been contested by two eyewitnesses who were present at the spot and helped the constable. However, another eyewitness has supported the police's claims.
