A worthy successor to the Zenfone 2 with better focus

Zenfone 2 Laser

Rs 9,999

The Zenfone 2 Laser is the new value-for-money device on the block. The first thing that strikes you about the design is its uncanny resemblance to the second generation of Moto G, only bigger and more elegant. We received the black coloured model, which looked stealthy and fit snugly into the palm like it was home. The rear of the Laser holds a 13 MP camera with PixelMaster, a two-tone flash that matches the flash to the light in the room, and a laser for precision auto-focus.

The camera package on this device is what makes it the one of the best in the budget. While 2 GB RAM, quad core processor, 3,000 mAh battery, 5.5 inch HD screen and Android Lollipop isn't all that exciting anymore for a sub-Rs 10,000 phone, it's the dual LTE SIM slots and the impressive camera that make this phone a great proposition.

The camera's pixels combine and re-assign jobs to themselves to capture fantastic images even in low light or HDR modes. Even the front camera does a good job despite its 5 MP specification. The screen reproduces these images admirably, although it's not full-HD. To be honest, we didn't find the screen any inferior to the 1080p ones of its competitors despite the larger size except in sunlight, where a little more screen brightness would have made life easier.

The Zen UI stays in the background, and the content you consume is easier to focus on because of the subdued colour schemes and customisable fonts throughout the UI. The sitting modes also make it easier to reach apps by grouping them into the category that matches their utility.

The Zenfone 2 Laser takes the best of its predecessor, the Zenfone 2, and improves on the qualities that have made it a crowd favourite. In no way does it disappoint except, maybe, for its bulky size. But to have a removable battery of 3,000 mAh capacity, it isn't that bad a tradeoff.
